Motor Start, Motor Run Capacitors (AC)

Run and start capacitors are support components for single-phase motor systems, whether in HVAC equipment like compressors, fans, and blowers or in general industrial applications such as pumps and conveyors. A run capacitor remains in the circuit during operation, providing a continuous phase shift that improves efficiency, stabilizes current, and helps maintain consistent torque. A start capacitor, by contrast, is only engaged during startup, delivering higher starting torque by increasing phase shift and current to overcome inertia. In HVAC systems, these may appear as motor run capacitors or dual run capacitors supporting multiple loads in one package, but the same principles apply across motor-driven equipment. In simple terms, the capacitor enables reliable starting and smooth operation, without it motors may fail to start, run inefficiently, or overheat.

When selecting a replacement capacitor, matching key specifications is critical. Start with capacitance (µF or MFD), which must fall within the tolerance range of the original component, typically ±5% to ±10% for run capacitors and wider for start capacitors. Next, match or exceed the voltage rating (VAC); never use a lower-rated capacitor, especially in high-voltage systems. Confirm the capacitor type, as start and run capacitors are not interchangeable, run capacitors are designed for continuous duty, while start capacitors are built for short-duration use. It’s also important to verify frequency (usually 50/60 Hz compatibility), along with physical characteristics such as can shape, mounting style, and terminal configuration to ensure proper fit and installation. A practical selection checklist is: µF → Voltage → Type → Frequency → Form factor.

Troubleshooting capacitor issues is often straightforward and can prevent unnecessary motor replacement. A failed start capacitor typically results in a motor that won’t start and may produce a humming sound, while a failed run capacitor can allow the motor to run but with reduced efficiency, overheating, or poor performance under load. Testing can be done with a multimeter that measures capacitance (after safely discharging the capacitor), comparing the reading to the labeled value, significant deviation indicates failure. Visual indicators such as bulging, leakage, or burned terminals also signal replacement. Because heat, electrical stress, and duty cycle affect lifespan, capacitors are common wear items. Checking them during routine maintenance or system tune-ups is a simple, cost-effective way to maintain reliable motor and HVAC operation.
