RL78/G23 solves design challenges by addressing key requirements, such as low-power consumption, larger ROM size, serial channel count increase, built-in touch interface, and added security functions. These features and expanded functions are implemented while maintaining compatibility with existing RL78 products, so users will be able to easily migrate from current RL78 designs.

Building on the popular RL78/G13 family, RL78/G23 offers increased ROM/RAM size (maximum 512 KB / 32 KB to 768 KB / 48 KB) and equips functions such as SMS and ELCL, touch keys, remote control receiver circuit, D/A and comparator, TRNG, customer ID and unique ID as security functions, output current selectable port, and 40 mA output port are implemented.

Renesas provides a reference design using the RL78/G23 to create a remote-controlled PC water cooler. The reference design from Renesas splits PC water cooling into two parts, the power unit inside the PC and the HMI control panel on a user's desk. This winning combination reference design for a remote-controlled PC (desktop/tower/mini tower) water cooler lowers the temperature of the computer processor and other critical components of the system such as graphics cards. PC water coolers absorb the heat from the components inside the system, rather than blowing the hot air around the case, as is typical with air cooling systems.
